The Hottest Restaurants in Atlanta Right Now, September 2019

Summerhill’s Junior’s Pizza and Wood’s Chapel BBQ make the list.

While the Eater 38 is a crucial resource covering old standbys and neighborhood essentials across the city, it’s not a chronicle of the “it” places of the moment. Thus, there’s the Eater Heatmap, which changes periodically to highlight where to eat currently around Atlanta. Since this is a spotlight on what’s happening right now, room must be made for fresh and new restaurants.

Junior’s Pizza, located along Georgia Avenue in Summerhill, began as a childhood dream for co-owner Alex Aton. That childhood dream eventually propelled Aton and wife and business partner Jennifer into the pizza-making business, first as a mobile delivery service and now as their first restaurant. Junior’s serves New York-inspired, thin crust pies and slices. Expect thin crust pizzas like “cup and char” pepperoni, white, and vegan, Sicilian-style deep dish pies, calzones, and salads here.

17. Wood’s Chapel BBQ
85 Georgia Ave SE
Atlanta, GA 30312

Wood’s Chapel BBQ opened along Summerhill’s burgeoning Georgia Avenue in June. The neighborhood barbecue restaurant, from chef Todd Ginsberg, Shelley Sweet, and Jennifer and Ben Johnson (The General Muir), offers brisket, hot smoked salmon, ribs, and chopped whole hog barbecue alongside beet and jalapeño coleslaw, mac and cheese mixed with burnt ends, and Southern pies like chess and peach for dessert. There’s also a game room for playing shuffleboard and darts and a 120-seat patio near the smokehouse.
