Award-winning restaurateurs Duane Nutter and Reginald Washington are back in Atlanta.
Nutter and Washington announced they will open Southern National in the burgeoning Summerhill restaurant district this summer. The restaurant will take residence in one of the new buildings that development firm Carter constructed on Georgia Avenue.
The duo is best known for creating One Flew South, the lauded fine-dining restaurant inside Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. Nutter and Washington left One Flew South in 2016 to open their first Southern National location in Mobile, Alabama. Last October, the New York Times named it one of the 50 best restaurants in America. The restaurant temporarily closed in January as the latest COVID-19 surge once again hampered business. Nutter and Washington said they intend to reopen the Mobile restaurant, but they do not have a timeline.
Now, they are working on an elevated version of Southern National that will suit Atlanta diners. Nutter intends to expand on the types of ingredients and techniques used at the original location. The new Southern National will serve modern Southern cuisine with global influences and be “more cosmopolitan” than its Mobile sibling, he said.
