Former One Flew South chef Duane Nutter returns to Atlanta with a new restaurant opening next summer in the Summerhill neighborhood. The yet-named Southern restaurant from Nutter and partner Reginald “Reggie” Washington will reside across the street from Little Bear on Georgia Avenue. Nutter and Washington also own Southern National restaurant in Mobile, Alabama.
“The way we see it, this is a community coming full-circle. From a neighborhood settled by freed slaves in the 1800s to one that showcases successful, black entrepreneurs today,” Washington says of opening the restaurant in Summerhill. “We’re committed to doing our part, by investing in the community and providing leadership towards a future of shared equity and prosperity.”
Washington says he plans to become a resident of Summerhill.
Nutter left One Flew South in 2016 to prepare for the opening of the now award-winning Southern National with Washington. The pair tapped lauded Atlanta bartender and cocktail expert Tiffanie Barrierie, who also worked at One Flew South, to create the drinks menu for Southern National. It’s unclear if Barrierie is involved with their new Summerhill restaurant.
