Hero Doughnuts opened on Georgia Avenue in Summerhill in August, and has been doing steady business ever since. The Homewood, Alabama-based doughnut and burger shop shares a large patio with newly opened Hot Dog Pete’s next door. The menu at Hero features over a dozen doughnut flavors, including a variety of cream-filled and cake doughnuts with toppings such as Fruity Pebbles or vanilla, chocolate, or pistachio glaze. Jam-filled doughnuts tend to change with the seasons. Hero also serves breakfast sandwiches, kolaches, hamburgers, a fried bologna sandwich, and its popular Buffalo chicken “super crunch” sandwich. Open for dine-in service. Hot Dog Pete’s opened in June on the edge of Georgia Avenue in Summerhill. The restaurant shares patio space for up to 50 people with neighboring sister restaurant Hero Doughnuts next door. Hot dogs here are cooked over charcoal, then dressed to order from a variety of toppings. Eight specialty hot dogs, including a vegan option, are listed on the menu, along with sides like onion rings, waffle fries, loaded fries, and collard greens cole slaw. Drinks such as floats, milkshakes, and eventually a handful of beers are also available on the menu. Open for dine-in service and takeout or delivery via DoorDash. Order online.
